Wrangling Paper Into Pop-Up Art
5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Pop-up paper art has become the province of professional artists and designers, appearing in books, advertising, and art galleries, but anyone can do it. In this workshop, participants will learn to make a variety of paper pop-up structures that can be shared with students or used in personal projects. Bring copies of photos or images you may want to incorporate into your pop-ups.
Academy Fellow Carolyn Tacey has been a middle school teacher for 27 years at The Center School, a small school where all educators teach multiple subjects. She integrates as much art as possible into her classes, whether it is in creative graphs in science or word posters in poetry workshops. Since taking a weeklong workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on paper engineering and pop-ups, she teaches pop-up classes, too. Students love the process and the challenge, and the results have been impressive.
