The World Premiere of HBO’s The Emperor’s Newest Clothes
A classic Hans Christian Andersen tale gets a colorful, music-filled makeover in HBO’s The Emperor’s Newest Clothes. Written and produced by Sheila Nevins, and featuring the voices of Alan Alda, Jeff Daniels, and Alison Pill, the whimsical story features original songs by Tony Award winner William Finn (Falsettos, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee). Directed by Simon Wilches-Castro and filled with bold animation, catchy musical numbers, and expressive characters, the special brings an important message to today’s young audiences about speaking up for the truth and standing up to the powerful. William Finn and Sheila Nevins will discuss their adaptation following the screening.
William Finn, music and lyrics, is well known for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a major Broadway success. Other notable credits include his trilogy of musicals, In Trousers, March of the Falsettos, and Falsettoland. Finn has won two Tonys, two Drama Desk Awards, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, two LA Drama Critics Awards, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Lucille Lortel Award. In addition to composing, he teaches a master class in NYU’s Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program.
Sheila Nevins, writer and producer, is the most influential producer of documentary films in the United States. A winner of thirty-two Primetime Emmy Awards and the former president of HBO Documentary Films, Ms. Nevins has worked on productions recognized with thirty-five News and Documentary Emmy Awards, forty-two Peabody Awards, and twenty-six Academy Awards.
