Sxip Shirey’s Variety Show
5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Sxip Shirey has been part of New York’s avant-garde for decades. His ongoing “Hour of Charm”—a variety show that includes unusual music, wild circus acts, and vivid storytelling—has been produced over the years by Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, Here Art Center, and National Sawdust. This program, produced by The Academy for Teachers, features aerial artist Una, storyteller Chris Wells, character comedian Chris Rozzi, Sarah Alden and her string quartet, acrobats Butch and Buttercup, linguistic contortionist Nathan Repaz, Coco Karol as Mary Tyler Moore, and Sxip Shirey himself, playing an amazing variety of objects and instruments in surprising and musical ways.
Sxip Shirey is a composer, producer, and performer based in New York City. He most recently toured internationally with the theater/circus arts production “Limbo” as a co-producer. Shirey teaches at the Norwegian Theater Academy in Fredrikstad, Norway, and has been a featured performer at TED. He wrote the music for the short film Statuesque, written and directed by Neil Gaiman and starring Bill Nighy. Shirey is a 2011 United States Artists Fellow. He is working on a new album entitled “Goodnight Little Machines,” planned for release in 2019.
