Master Class on Basketball
Not many people have biographies written about them with titles like The Miracle of St Anthony’s, but Coach Hurley does. And for good reason: This saint with a salty tongue has saved countless young lives over the course of 40 plus years coaching in a poor Catholic high school in Jersey City. Hurley has led his young men to so many championships that he has earned himself a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame, a feat matched by only two other high school coaches. For this Master Class, each teacher will bring along a student and Hurley will use them to demonstrate “must do” drills. He will then discuss coaching with the teachers, who will also be given an opportunity to share their best strategies with each other.
Bob Hurley, Sr. has been the basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey for decades. His accomplishments are monumental. He is one of three high school coaches inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Under his watch, St. Anthony’s has produced more than 150 NCAA Division I players, five NBA first-round draft picks, won 27 state championships, and more than 1000 wins. He is the subject of a biography, The Miracle of St. Anthony’s, by Adrian Wojnarowski, and was profiled on the CBS news magazine Sixty Minutes.
