Making Documentary Films
This is the first in our new series: Teachers Teaching Teachers. These free programs are led by Fellows, for Fellows. In “Making Documentary Films,” Academy Fellow Jason McDonald shares his passion for making documentary films. Jason will teach you how to create a documentary film using online archival material. Each Fellow will choose a topic to research and then take a deep dive into digital archives such as The National Archives, The Library of Congress, The Imperial War Museum, and Ancestry. After learning to import archival material into Final Cut Pro, iMovie, and PowerPoint, each Fellow will produce a brief documentary film on their topic. All free! Lunch included!
Jason McDonald has taught technology and history for 23 years in New York City independent schools. At Grace Church School, he currently teaches filmmaking and a course called War and Peace. He has completed two history documentaries with his students, and is working on a third. A media consultant for World War II museums around the United States, Jason was a teaching fellow at the Imperial War Museum in 2015.
