In this master class, we will draw on jazz, blues, hip hop, Bobby McFerrin circle singing, and the personal stories of participants as we improvise vocal arrangements of well-known American music. At the end of this intensive day-long workshop, participants will perform with The Academy for Teachers Chorus at Carnegie Hall, in a concert that brings singers and audience together in a song-filled celebration of American diversity.
Nick Demeris is a singer, actor, and composer who has turned audiences around the world into choral “orchestras” to reclaim the primal power of singing together. At Carnegie Hall and other forums, he works with master musicians, teachers, artists, and incarcerated youth to improvise, write, produce, and record original music. A TEDx speaker, Demeris performs widely and travels constantly, leading “human instrument” workshops internationally for arts organizations, community groups, universities, and corporations.
